Left Alone to Die

Two years ago when we were just little kittens our humans abandoned my brother and I near the river in Pokemouche in Northern New Brunswick. They just left us on a walking trail all alone to die, but we didn’t want to die yet. At our age, we hadn’t even begun to live. We stayed together for comfort and waited to see if they would come back for us. We were too young to hunt, but luckily there was a campsite nearby and the people would throw us food so we didn’t starve.

Cats Fergus and NeroOne day something horrible happened. I was looking for food and got caught in a snare. It hurt so much and I was so scared. I pulled and fought and finally got free, but it tore three of my claws off. My brother could have gone to find a warm home, but he stayed with me instead. My foot became all swollen and infected. I had really given up and thought I would die.

Just when I thought I was a goner, two little humans found us and took us home. Their mother was a veterinarian who was visiting the area and she felt so sorry for us. We both got baths (we were really dirty) and she gave me pills that would make my fever go down and stop the infection. Then they offered us food and we ate and ate and ate. Our little bellies felt so full. Afterwards, they gave us a warm soft basket. We were so tired, we barely heard her say that she would take us to her veterinary hospital to fix us up.

Going to the hospital was really scary, but my brother had promised to stay with me so it wasn’t so bad. We got treated for fleas, ear mites and worms when we got there and started feeling much better.

After a few weeks we started feeling so much better that the veterinarian said we were ready to be adopted. I think adopted means we get to go to our very own home, with lots of love, attention and food. That sounded so nice, but what would happen if someone only wanted one of us? That would mean I would lose my brother and never get to see him again. It hurts so much thinking about it because he had stayed with me and had taken care of me when I was sick.

The people at the veterinary hospital worked really hard to find someone to adopt both of us so we could stay together forever. They told everybody that we promised to be really good and keep each other company when our new family was not there. They also told everyone that when someone in our new family got sick or sad there would be two of us taking care of them.

Update

Great news!!! Some nice people came in and fell in love with us. We got to go to a nice home with lots of love, attention and food. The best part is that we got to go TOGETHER! We are so happy and now we know we’ll never have to be apart.
